David Ragan joins Cup winners

Saturday night I was watching the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at historic Daytona International Speedway for the annual Fourth of July weekend's Coca-Cola 400 and found myself rooting strongly at the end for someone I never thought I would.

No, it wasn't Jimmie Johnson, but instead was David Ragan. In his fifth full-time season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Ragan finally was able to score a victory.

Driving his No. 6 UPS Ford for Roush Fenway Racing, Ragan, still only 25-years-old, but his frustrating Daytona 500 race, where he seemingly had the race won, and got the win when on the last green-white-checkered finish he got a strong push from teammate Matt Kenseth and beat Kenseth, Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch to the finish.

In this season where guys like Regan Smith and Trevor Bayne have already got their first career Cup "W," it was great seeing Ragan add his name to that list.

MP Speedway update & Race vs Kyle Busch

Mt. Pleasant Speedway - 1
Mother Nature - 1

Mother Nature evened the score on Friday, May 7 when daylong rain forced the cancelation of May 7 races at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway.

On the regular schedule for Friday, May 14 is a full show plus a Taco Boy sponsored $500 special in the Smokers Club UMP Stock Car/Street Stock class.

On the NASCAR side, for Michigan International Speedway fans who think they can race against NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch, they now have that opportunity.

From: www.mispeedway.com:
On Tuesday, May 11, Busch will participate in a Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 Go-Kart Challenge with fans at Craig’s Cruisers – 5730 Clyde Park SW in Wyoming, Mich. The Go-Kart Challenge is open to the public. Busch is visiting Michigan to support the June 11-13 Heluva Good! Sour Creams Dips 400 race weekend at MIS.

Fans will have to earn a spot in the finals through qualifying sessions from 9-11 a.m. on May 11. The top-12 times advance to the finals against Busch at 2 p.m. Qualifying sessions will cost $5 each, Craig’s Cruisers’ regular fee.

A fan question and answer session with Busch will take place following the day’s activities. The winner of the final heat will be presented a trophy and have a photo op with Busch.

“What a great chance for our fans to have the opportunity to race against Kyle Busch!” MIS President Roger Curtis said. “Kyle is one of NASCAR’s top-tier drivers and we appreciate him giving us his time to participate in this event and provide 12 lucky fans that qualify the fastest the once-in-a-lifetime experience to race against him. It will be a fun day.”

MIS is giving away one guaranteed spot in the final race against Busch to a fan who can correctly guess the number of M&M’s in a vase in the ticket office at the track’s administration building. Fans may guess Monday through Friday during normal business hours (8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.) how many M&M’s are in the 20-inch vase. The fan that guesses the closest number of M&M’s will automatically race against the defending NASCAR nationwide Series Champion. The winner will be selected and contacted at 5 p.m. on May 10.

“We thought this was a fun contest to give a fan a chance to take a guess at how many M&M’s are in the vase and give someone the chance to automatically race against Kyle,” Curtis said. “So come on in and visit the ticket office and take a guess!”

Busch will also race against the media and some of the track’s partners that day.

Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.

MIS tickets are on sale. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tickets for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 on June 13 and CARFAX 400 on August 15 are as low as $25. Visit MISpeedway.com or call the MIS ticket hotline at 800-354-1010 today to take advantage of great pricing for 2010 events at MIS.

MP Speedway opening night success

The first week of the 2010 racing season at the MP Speedway could not have gone any better as there were warm temps, bright sunny skies, a standing room only crowd and lots of great racing action.

Fans were filing into the track shortly after the gates opened at 5 p.m. Friday night, April 30. From there the fans kept piling in.

After a long winter and spring months, track owner Betty Crook and her staff had the track in top shape and the facilities looking awesome!

For the Miller Lite UMP Late Models the big winner was Lake City's No. 27 Eric Spangler as he took home both heat and feature wins.

Over in the Chuck's Discount Foods UMP Modified class, Mt. Pleasant's No. 81 Lawrence Sprague Jr. grabbed the feature win.

In the Smokers Club Stock Cars, the feature win went to No. 69 Nate Murphy.

The NAPA Modified Mini Stocks saw No. 68 Trever Fedewa dominate as he swept the class, getting heat and feature wins.

The MP and Clare Automotive Stock Mini feature saw No. 711 "Taco" Bob Baltierrez get his first career feature win.

So after 7 months of anticipation, the wait was well worth it for drivers, fans and staff alike and now the wait gets shorter - this time it's only 7 days until we do it all over again.

One final note, group of MP Speedway workers are putting on a benefit for injured Late Model driver No. 21 David Hilliker, who broke his femur on Easter and is off work and racing for several months.

Held rain or shine, the benefit is at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Mt. Pleasant Speedway and will include silent donation items from restaurant gift certificates to racing tires and more. Meat and pop provided, as patrons should bring dish to pass, lawnchairs and alcoholic beverages. Live music provided by Paul Pego and tons of fun!! Come out and support a great racing family and person.
